Periodontitis is a common disease. The disease always begins with gum inflammation and attendant gum bleeding. Often, however, this particular symptom does not occur in patients that smoke. In addition, these patients suffer from reduced defence-reactions to the disease-causing bacteria. Refractory bacteria usually cause inflammations of this kind. Therefore a thorough removal of the bacteria crusts from the root surface, to enable the gum to grow together with the tooth surface again, is often enough to stop the disease. If the bleeding has not stopped, bacteria settled on the mucous membrane or an atypical intestinal flora are probably to blame. Only in rare cases are further surgical interventions necessary .
